Question for all you writers out there

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 12, 2009, 6:47 PM
  • Mood: Cheerful
I've noticed for a long time that when I write, I prefer writing male characters. I've noticed that a lot of female authors tend to do the same thing, whether it's J.K. Rowling with Harry Potter, or Jan Karon with Father Tim.

Conversely, men seem to enjoy writing women. I've long laughed about how certain fic authors whom I've followed tend to have giant all-female casts.

So I was pondering ... why is this?

I've heard the standard psychology answer is that we're getting in touch with our feminine/masculine sides. And I suppose there's some truth in that.

But personally, when I write guys, it's not because I'm exploring the man within myself. I write them because I'm fascinated by men. I try to figure out what makes them tick every time I write one. Men's minds work differently from womens', and it intrigues me to try to think that way.

So how about you? Do you enjoy writing the opposite sex? And if so, why?

My theory is that it's easier to write a character of the opposite gender without turning them into yourself. I find one of my greatest challenges when writing any of my female characters is that I'm inclined to make them do what I would do, probably because I can put myself in their mind easier. With a male character, there's a sort of distancing effect that means I thinking about what THEY would do rather than what I might do. I also agree that I am fascinated by men's thought processes. I find it easier to come up with male characters than it is female characters, so a large portion of my cast becomes male simply by accident.

Hrm...now that I think about it, I do have more male characters than females. Why? I think in part I'd have to agree with you...I know how a female minds works as a woman. A guy's mind? Now that's totally different territory. It's kinda interesting to see how well I can write one.

I also think it's interesting that in a writing-the-opposite-gender scenario, people tend to notice the faults more than the good things. For example Harry is terrible with women and doesn't pick up on very simple clues that his girlfriends or female friends leave for him. I can't help but wonder--am I just getting those clues because I AM female, and guys really don't pick up on it? Or is Harry coming off pretty stupid and just not getting the obvious things because Rowling is overemphasizing that stereotype?

I've noticed the same thing for men-writing-women although an example escapes me at the moment...

Puzzling. Cool question!

Because the opposite sex is far more interesting.

Simple as that.

Most of my characters are men, and I don't know why... I just seem to connect with most of my male characters more than my females ones, and I find the way they think amusing and fasinating. I pretty sure this has something to do with the fact that one of my closest friends is my little brother.

lol that is so interesting. I like to write about guys too! I put a lot of work into my male characters. I reckon it's for the same reasons as you. I guess I also like to try to keep them as "real" as possible, but at the same time make them ideal.

I guess guys are the same way when it comes to writing about women lol!

To be honest, I might be the most feminine non-gay Man you might know.

"it's not because I'm exploring the man within myself"

I laughed slightly.

I tend to spend more time writing about my Male characters. I haven't really used my Female Characters yet. I getting ideas for stories now... I must go brainstorm.

Very intresting. I've noticed this as well. I too perfer writing men over women. (but that's not to say I don't have any female characters, which I do. XD )

Hmm...my guess would be that it's just more intresting/fun to write about the opposite gender. ^_^
