My art production may be a tad slower than normal for the next few months. I had baby number 2 on May 14th, and tis a girl. It's kind of hard to draw when you have a baby in your arms, so it'll be a while before I get anything new churned out.
However, I'm open for thought experiments!

was telling me about this silly project he's working on. He's taken somebody's fancharacters who are really, really sucky, and is making them cool. (He's not posting the results or anything ... it's more of a thought experiment.)
It got me to thinking ... who might I try to desuckify?
Why, only the most hated character in the Sonic universe: Chris Thorndyke!
So ... anybody got any ideas on how to make Chris not suck? XD

When you say "desuckify", do you mean his personality or the fact that he has no powers whatsoever?

If chatspeak was a required language in class, I'd fail it.
Other than the fact that he steals the limelight from Sonic all the time.
1) He steals all the spotlight (like you said)
2) He has no powers
3) He's too clingy and dependable on Sonic.
4) He steals Tails' place as little brother/best friend
5) He even ends up stealing the "super intelligent" spot from Tails!
Anything else that you can think of?

I have to agree with what Starprincess said, with the exception of the no powers thing, because I can't see a Chris with special powers being any better than the wimpy Chris we have now (he'd just be even more of a sert).
Chris's problem, I think, is that he's a classic "sert"--a normal kid from a normal Earth in which Sonic the Hedgehog just happens to magically appear into his life and immediately becomes his best friend. His parents are rich so he never has to do anything but go to school and goof off with his friends. He's clingy and whiny and hero-worshippy and Sonic loves him anyway, and he even gets away with being in Robotnik and even Shadow's presence. He hangs out with anybody but never suffers any real consequences for it. Do you know how many times I've seen all of this in Star Wars fanfics alone? That's why Chris sucks, everything about him is a patented sert cliche.
Fortunately this means there are lots of ways to fix him up. Such as:
1.) What if Chris weren't normal? What if he had been pretty popular (since his parents seem to be pretty well-off it probably wouldn't be that far-fetched), and having Sonic show up ruined that for him, rather than him benefitting from it?
2.) What if his family weren't so well off? How would the dynamics change if he were poor, or if people disliked his family? Would other kids give him a hard time because Sonic became his friend?
3.) Solid friendships generally don't appear out of thin air. What if Sonic didn't want to be his friend? Or was on friendly terms but just wasn't inclined to be that close? Why couldn't Chris have become just another Amy, chasing a Sonic who was repelled by his clingyness?
4.) What if Chris actually had a life of his own, instead of being clingy/whiny? Even Tails graduated to having his own workshop where he did his own thing.
To add onto Starprincess13's comment:
6) He is absolutely useless.
7) He just went along with Knuckles (giving Eggman the Chaos Emeralds) because he wanted to take the easy way out.
And, weeeeell...I don't really know...Chris sucks so much it's pretty much impossible to desuckify him.
1. Maybe if Chris' parents died and he become poor and then...I dunno...he dies. I'll be happy if he dies.
Meh, can't be bothered to think anymore. My brain hurts from stupid exams.

And Chris? I actually happen to be one of the few people who LIKE Chris, but make him a bit more independant and give him a bit more attitude. Like, have him give a wisecrack every now and again. Or make him into a girl. Then he'd be able to get away with being clingy and whiny. *SHOT*

1. make him able to stand on his own feet (this includes turning him away from being a whiny little Sonic-groupie he is).
2. I know he has strengths somewhere in all that "save me, I'm completely helpless and clueless" mush; try to concentrate on those and maybe amplify them.
3. I'd say the best thing you could do for the character is take him out of the Sonic X universe and rebuild him as a stand on his own character (may be even making him average instead of the snotty rich boy type that he now stands as would help this a lot).
My personal opinion is Sega (or whoever wrote the anime) took a minor character that should have been on the sidelines and maybe gone after a few episodes and tried to make him into a major character. I know they did this so kids could "connect" to the character in some way like they didn't see them connecting with the fuzzy talking animals, but I think this plan backfired as a lot of the audience who ended up watching the show were already Sonic fans to begin with and Chris turned into a major annoyance for them. Plus who could really connect with a rich little brat who always has servants there to help him get his way. Chris never really had to endure a real struggle (internal or external) that others didn't show up and help solve for him.
Did I just rant there?
Congratulations on the new addition to your family!
