"Lord, thank you for the rose. Help me to be thankful for the thorns, as well."

This pic arose (hah! a-rose!) out of pondering that prayer. Also, my art teacher had talked about how putting something beautiful against something ugly makes for an intriguing composition. I tried it, and here it is.

This is my first major essay in Corel Painter IX. It wasn't as hard as I thought, once I got familier with the way it handled (and watched all the tutorial videos). The sky's the limit from now on. :-)

Wow, that's beautiful!! Your art teacher was right, the beautiful against dark makes a stunning effect. I love the way you've included every tiny detail and shading into the picture, such as the petals on the rose and darkness around it. It's almost like I can reach forward and actually touch it -- the texture of the whole thing gives it such a good realistic effect. I like the shafts of light above the rose as well, and the way it curves around as if there is darkness about the flower.

All in all a perfect piece of work, and since this is your first major picture using Corel Painter... wow... I don't know whether to go green with envy or look up at you in admiration. I'll just do the best thing... :faint:

It turned out very well! The contrast between the red and the spiky blue is really attention grabbing. And the objects are well done on top of it.

*whistles* Very nice work, NR. I liked the rose on the black background. It makes the rose stand out very well.
